Student Health Insurance Information, Elect/Waive Choice for 2008-2009

Because the University requires all undergraduate students registered for 9 or more hours to carry health insurance, the following questions should be considered when deciding on your choice of insurance.

  1. Does your plan provide for medically-necessary care at the TCU Health Center and/or in the Fort Worth area?
  2. Is the maximum benefit on your plan at least $500,000 per illness or injury?
  3. Does your plan include prescription coverage?
  4. Are you aware if an age restriction (such as turning 18 or 21) will disqualify you from coverage under your parents' plan?
  5. Are you covered for medical treatment while traveling away from home or studying abroad?
  6. Will your current policy remain in effect for the entire 2008-2009 academic year?
  7. Is the deductible on your current policy $250 or less?

Undergraduate students registered for nine or more semester hours are REQUIRED to have health insurance through either the University-offered plan or an individual/family plan. International students, regardless of classification, are REQUIRED to carry the University-offered plan as a minimum standard of coverage.

The university-offered program is a major medical plan administered by The Aetna Student Health Group and underwritten by Aetna Life Insurance Company. Some highlights of the University-offered Plan include:

  • Benefit Maximum - $500,000 per illness/injury
  • Individual Deductible - $250 per Plan year
  • Prescription Drug Benefit - $2,000 maximum per Plan Year
  • Waiver of pre-existing conditions
  • Traveler's Assistance Services
  • Medical Evacuation & Repatriation Benefits
  • Mental Health & Substance Abuse Benefits
  • Out-of-Pocket Maximums
  • Semester Cost of Coverage - $623 per student per semester
  • Coverage dates are August 15, 2008 to January 09, 2009 for the fall semester; and January 10, 2009 to August 14, 2009 for the spring/summer.

Details of the Plan can be found in the "2008/2009 Student Health Insurance Plan" booklet that can be viewed online at http://www.healthcenter.tcu.edu.

Undergraduates registered for less than nine hours and Graduate students are NOT REQUIRED to carry health insurance but have the option to specifically ELECT the University-offered plan.

An undergraduate who is REQUIRED to carry health insurance and who has adequate coverage through a family/individual policy that will remain in effect throughout the 2008-2009 academic year, must WAIVE by August 29, 2008. If not waived by the deadline, the student will be auto-enrolled and billed for the University-offered plan.

The information above has been provided to help you make an intelligent, informed choice.
